May 20th marked the 1700th anniversary of the beginning of the Council of Nicaea. This was a pivotal moment in the life of the church and it saved the church from heading into a fusion of pagan philosophy and worship combined with Christian morals and ideals.
Nicaea has been portrayed by some (starting with Dan Brown in the DaVinci Code on a popular level) as a conspiracy to popularize Christianity by making Jesus God, something that, according this conspiracy, was not widely held before Nicaea. But history reveals otherwise and shows that Nicaea was a near unanimous affirmation of what Jesus and the apostles themselves had taught.
This is a long but compelling read, pulling the curtain back on how the Council of Nicaea gathered and how their verification of already established doctrine was actually a counter-cultural action. Which Christian beliefs often are.
