Our church is currently beginning the process of considering a new constitution and by-laws, one that would allow us to move toward elder-led congregationalism. In function, it isn't much different from the way we have operated for years with the congregation having the final say on doctrine, membership/discipline, election of leaders, missions support, the budget, and capital improvements. The big difference is moving from a solo-pastor to adding qualified and gifted men to help pastor and lead the church. What an incredible blessing to have a congregation that is wise and trustworthy on those issues - and what a blessing it will be to have different gifts from different men at play in shepherding the church.
One of the things I mentioned in teaching on this last night is the inevitable tension that will come between following the leadership of the elders as discussed in Hebrews 13 and the congregation's responsibility to make sure the church doesn't go off track into bad practice and doctrine. Where is that line between following and trusting and standing up and saying no? What should the default position be? This is some of what I read and pulled from and I found it personally helpful in considering this. The fire drill analogy was especially helpful.
BTW, these principles are good to think through even if you had a solo pastor church - it isn't limited to churches with a plurality.
