Our relocation story

Greenwood Baptist Church first worshiped as a church in 1976 and in 1977 began meeting in the building they built on Deadfall Road, near the Greenwood Airport. The investment of the congregation into that property and the ministry that flowed from it is incalculable!

Through the decades, God worked mightily in that place and a strong church took root among the pines. The property was set up with a church building, gymnasium, and ball fields and these were used effectively for a variety of ministries that served the Kingdom well.
In 2020, as the church's ministry focus began to shift toward smaller groups with a large Sunday gathering, our congregation began to pray about what advancing the gospel for the next Generation in Greenwood might look like. Part of this consideration was evaluating whether the church would be able to better fulfill its mission by relocating to the heart of our community.

From being in the middle of the people of our community, to even more ministry to Lander University students, to being in a more visible place, to staying at the Deadfall Road property for continued faithful ministry, the church through prayer and fasting wrestled through what the future would look like. In the goodness of God, as the church prayed this time of seeking brought a new season of growth. This brought a new problem: the church building on Deadfall was getting too small. The church continued to pray about remodeling the gymnasium and gathering there or proceeding with the potential relocation. In the fall of 2022 the church voted overwhelmingly to list the Deadfall Road property for sale to see what the Lord might do. The goal in potentially selling was to relocate to the heart of the community with a smaller land footprint but a larger building in a more central location that would be easily accessible from most of Greenwood and close to Lander University.
Almost a year later, the Lord brought several excellent buyers along at the same time. The property sold in November of 2023 and through the Lord's provision the church was able to continue worshipping at that location while an intermediate space was secured. On March 31, 2024 the church held its final gathering on Deadfall Road with services being continued in an excellent intermediate space on Birchtree Drive. The church currently has a contract on a building in the heart of the community. We have prayed from the beginning that God would work in such a way that only he could get the credit - we can't wait to see how this story ends! We would welcome you along on this journey of taking the gospel forward for the next generation of our community.
